Students, really it breaks it down step-by-step, so students are just able to follow the template essentially and they are learning about geography in a really engaging way that no other app that I've found is able to do.A description of your environment must be created by gathering information about the key components, how they interact, and the metrics for success and failure. That's like the simplest way to start it. Those GeoInquiries that are already made, there's already Google forms. And so those are things that I wouldn't have learned on my own, so I would definitely, definitely encourage finding a training to really support you in that. I learned about making my own map and finding my own data and creating my own maps.
But with the training I learned about their storyboards. Because like I said, there are a lot of things that they're able to do. So if you are a teacher like myself, I would definitely recommend finding a training to help support you in navigating ArcGIS. But I will say now that my students, I would say after they've done it one or two times, they become a lot more proficient and I love that ArcGIS also has level two lessons, so where my sixth and seventh graders might start with level one because they're a little bit simpler, my older students that have now done it for a year or two, they're able to get into the level two lessons that really helps them manipulate the map in ways that the level one can't. You do have to take some time to explicitly show them how the maps work, the different layers of the maps, all the different things that you can do. For my students also, there's a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately, I was able to go to a training along with some of my colleagues to really understand all of the different ways to use ArcGIS and I'm sure there's still a lot I'm not even sure of. So the initial onboarding of ArcGIS definitely takes a bit of time to learn.
It's the best thing, as a teacher, that I have all of these lessons pre-made and it's something that's really simple for my students to use, which always a plus too. So rather than me having to find lessons and create them on Google Earth or create them on different apps, ArcGIS has all of those already made. They have already made lesson plans with printout questions, with already to go maps that my students already know how to use. I teach middle school but there's even a lot of programs for elementary school. So the main reason that we decided to go with ArcGIS at our school is because they make it super, super easy for my students. There's way more they can do, so we've been able to integrate ArcGIS instead of those. A little bit of Google My Maps, but ArcGIS makes it way easier for my students. When considering integrating ArcGIS at our school, previously we were using a lot of Google Maps, as well as Google Earth.
